A helicopter’s searchlight sliced through the rain, blinding white over twisted metal and shattered glass. A voice boomed from above: “Step away from the vehicle!”
Both the men and Dan froze. “Federal transport enforcement,” the loudspeaker barked. “Hands visible!”
The suited man looked up, eyes narrowing. “You called them,” he said.
But before Dan could answer, a second chopper swept in from the east—this one without any markings at all.
