Thomas came back every day that week. Each time, the nurse would smile as he entered, a coffee in one hand and a small bag of treats in the other.

The mother dog—now clean, her fur soft again—watched him quietly from her cage, her eyes calmer each day. The pup grew stronger, tumbling over her paws with clumsy steps.

“She trusts you,” the vet said one afternoon. Thomas looked through the glass. The mother blinked slowly at him, her tail giving a faint wag.

“Guess we’ve been through the same storm,” he murmured, pressing his palm to the glass. “We both got a second chance.”
