They placed the mother on a heated table, rubbing her with dry cloths. Another nurse tended to the pup, coaxing it to breathe stronger with gentle pats.

Thomas stood back, dripping water onto the tile floor, too tense to sit. “Will they make it?” he asked. The vet didn’t look up. “If love counts for anything—they’ve got a chance.”

He finally sank into a chair, exhausted, his hands still shaking from adrenaline and cold.
