
Thomas bundled the towels tighter and jogged through the rain toward his car. A station worker ran alongside, holding an umbrella over the pups as best he could.
“Clinic’s ten minutes away if the roads aren’t flooded,” someone shouted. Thomas nodded, already starting the engine.
On the passenger seat, the older puppy curled around the smaller one again, as if the metal rails were still beneath them and only its body could keep the cold away.
“Hang on,” Thomas said, voice low and steady. “We’re not letting a train take you today.”
