
The storm came out of nowhere—sheets of rain hammering the windshield, wipers clawing at water that wouldn’t move. Dan kept both hands on the wheel, eyes locked on the glowing lane markers that rose and vanished like ghosts.
Then the trailer lurched. A hard jolt shook the cab, followed by a grinding squeal that didn’t sound like tires. Something had shifted—badly.
He checked his mirrors. For a split second, the beam of his taillights caught a spray of dark shapes tumbling across the asphalt.
